Satori Hair, sustainable hair salons in Melbourne
Megan Anderson, 2013 to now

A salon that does not
smell like a salon

That was the whole brief in 2013, and it is still the shortest honest description of what we do. Everything else — three rooms, nine stylists, five waste streams — came out of taking it seriously.

A glimpse of enlightenment.

Megan opened the first room on Geelong Rd in Kingsville in 2013, after years in salons that made her cough. Ammonia free colour was the starting condition, not a line she added later — and in 2013, in Melbourne’s west, that made her the odd one out.

The waste came next. A busy salon fills a skip: hair, foil, tubes, packaging, and colour going straight down a drain. Sorting it properly takes a bin system, a supplier who ships less, and someone doing it by hand at the end of every day. We got to 95% and published the working, line by line, so you can check the claim rather than take it.

Sunshine opened in 2019, Essendon in 2024, and behind Essendon there is now SATORI House , a room for healing and workshops that has nothing to do with hair. That is the whole idea. Nothing about it is complicated.

How it actually happened

No investors, no franchise, no rebrand. One salon at a time, each one opened once the last one could run without her in it.

  1. 2013

    One room on Geelong Rd

Megan opened Kingsville with a simple brief: a salon that did not smell like a salon, and did not fill a skip every week. Ammonia free colour from the first day, when almost nobody in the west was using it.

  2. 2019

Sunshine, and a second week to run

Watt St opened six years in. It is now the busiest room in the group and the one people drive across town for curls. Same prices, same colour, its own set of regulars.

  3. 2024

Essendon, and SATORI House behind it

Buckley St opened in May, and the room behind it became SATORI House, a space for healing, workshops and teaching that is not about hair at all. It was the part of the name we had never given anywhere to live.

  4. Today

Three salons, nine stylists, one bin

Twelve years on, 235 Google reviews and a 4.9 average across the three rooms. The colour is still ammonia free, the ponytails still get sent on, and the bins are still sorted by hand at the end of every day.

Every salon website says warm, honest and sustainable. These are the four we are willing to be checked on, and each one links to the page where you can do it.

    Ammonia free, in every chair

Not a premium line you have to ask for. It is the only colour in all three salons, and it has been since 2013.

Ninety five per cent never reaches a bin

Hair, ponytails, foils, colour water, packaging. Five streams, sorted by hand. The ledger names each one and where it goes.

You book a person, not a chair

Several of our stylists work across more than one salon. If you have a favourite, follow them. The room is the easy part.

salon is to sit in it
